It is the year 1372 of the current era, and the great city of Neverwinter faces its greatest threat yet. It finds its walls besieged not enemies or monsters, but the very people its inhabitants could once call allies. It all started with the sickness that was first observed in the Beggar’s Nest district, which went on to mercilessly sweep through the streets, taking countless lives. This malady, referred to as the “Wailing Death”, has resisted any attempts to be cured through magical or mundane means, taking life indiscriminately and almost unpredictably, as victims have ranged from those on the streets to those who boarded their doors and were only found days later as their corpses began to fester. News of this spread quickly to the recently formed Lord’s Alliance, which, in an effort to contain the sickness, cut off all exits from the city, even erecting magical barriers to prevent those who could from translocating out. The only ones that remain are those who found themselves in the city when this happened and those foolish enough to enter after the fact, knowing that they might never come out. Now a month has gone by, and now the situation inside is looking increasingly grim as the death toll along with the uncertainty of the situation has fractured society and the city itself, with the different districts of the once proud jewel of the north deteriorating into thiefdoms or outright anarchy. Within all this darkness, however, a glimmer of hope arose as through the dedication of clerics and alchemists, an agent was theorized that could neutralize the illness (now called “The Wailing Death”), created from ingredients procured from four unique creatures. It, however , would not be able to be synthesized as the creatures which were being kept in secret at Neverwinter Academy were almost destroyed in a raid on the locale, but the intervention of the servants of Tyr prevented this, ending with the creatures ultimately escaping into the streets of the city. Now suspecting some degree of foul play, not only in regards to the secret of the creatures getting out, but in the plague as a whole, Lord Nashor Aragondar leader of Neverwinter, along with Paladin of Tyr and his right hand, Lady Aribeth de Tylmarande, have put out a call out for those who would assist the guard in re-establishing order across town, selecting the most promising ones for a mission to uncover the truth behind the Wailing Death.
